Driving in Japan

To drive in Japan, you will need a New Zealand Drivers Licence and an International Drivers Permit.

You can apply for an international drivers permit from AA here - and along with your New Zealand’s Driver Licence, you shall be able to drive in Japan.

In Japan, they drive on the same side as us and you will find a range of rental cars that are just like those we see on the roads here. Personally, I have only ever driven on the roads in the outer Osaka region, Northern Kyoto and Okinawa. This alone was an experience, but driving in Tokyo was not a risk I was willing to take ;D

Road rules in Japan are strict and Japanese drivers are very considerate, it is a pleasant driving experience as long as you are aware of the road rule and are courteous.

One activity we were a little surprised (but covered for) where you needed an IDP was Go-Kart tours throughout Tokyo city - if you are thinking of participating in one of these tours, then you should definitely get an IDP - they will deny you from partaking without one (make sure you get a physical IDP as they do not accept electronic copies).

An IDP is translated into the following: English, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, German, Italian, Japanese and French - this means it is acceptable in most countries that are members to the 1949 Convention. If you are unsure whether you will need one, make sure to check the AA website above.
